Male And Female Pattern Baldness:
The most common is a thinning hair condition called androgenic alopecia or male and female pattern baldness (regular hair pieces work well). The amount can vary; it ranges from male and female pattern androgenetic alopecia, also called alopecia areata, to alopecia totalis, (womens vacum hair systrm works well) which involves the loss of head hair, to the most extreme form, alopecia universalis, which means you don't have any hair. Anywhere.
Incidences of male and female pattern baldness varies. Most studys show hair loss increases with age. Male pattern baldness affects 40 million men. 20 million women have thining hair - a small percentsge are "bald". You have a 4 in 7 chance of getting the male baldness gene. You can get better odds in Vegas. And if you win you can buy yourself a new custom hair piece.
MPB and some female frontal hair loss is characterized by a receding hairline. In females it's usually caused by traction alopecia. I personally started loosing my hair in my mid-twenties. My Dad has a receding hairline so I thought my hair loss would end there but unfortunatly it didn't.
The mechanism by which DHT accomplishes this isn't fully understood. Genetically, DHT initiates a process where the hair shaft diameter gets smaller until scalp hair resembles "peach fuzz" or becomes non-existent. Male pattern baldness is classified on the Hamilton-Norwood scale.
The current feeling is that both parents contribute to their childrens hair loss. I know that seems to be true in my case because my fathers father was bald and my mothers brother is bald. Too bad the statute of limitations has run out. I'd sue em both! LOL
There Are Several other Kinds Of Baldness And Types Of Hair Loss Found In Both Men And Women:
Small hairpieces (partials) can be made for women with traction alopecia or men with moderate frontal hair loss. My experience is that they're not worth the hassle unless their at least 2-3 inches deep, you're a movie-star and have a make-up person following you around, you can go in for hair service every 2-3 weeks or you're an experienced hair piece wearer.
For alopecia totalis full cranium vacuum hairpieces are worth looking at. I know that sounds weird but most are made with beautifull European hair and look great. I know Peggy Knight carries them and a few more. I would too but I've never had a call for one.
Although baldness is not as common in women as it is in men, the psychological effects of hair loss tends to be much greater. Typically the frontal hairline is preserved but the density of hair is decreased. It was believed to be caused by excess testosterone just as in male baldness, but most women who lose their hair have normal testosterone levels.
Problems due to baldness are typically most severe at the onset of hair loss. I know they were for me. Then again, some balding men feel proud and develop a kindred feeling with other famous bald men such as Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel and Sean Connery. But remember, both Bruce Willis and Sean Connery got their start playing characters with hair pieces. They didn't take off their hair systems untill they became successfull movie-stars.
Will There Ever Be A Cure For Hair Loss In Men And Women?
I don't think so unless it's accidental. With the aging of America and the current perception of baldness in society I don't think the big pharmasuitical companies are going to invest the billions necessary. We say show me the hair baby--they say show me the money baby!
